Highways Eng. Department
The Highway Engineering Department was established to offer cutting edge professional and academic training in the field of road construction in line with the Institution’s vision, "To Become The Preferred Infrastructure training Institution In Africa And Beyond." The department spearheads the upgrading of KIHBT into a Regional Flagship TVET Institute (RFTI) and Centre of Excellence in Roads and Highways Training; under the funding of East African Skills For Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP), a World Bank funded project.
The department offers training in road construction from the Certificate level, Diploma level and Higher Diploma level. In collaboration with the Capacity Building department, we also offer tailor made courses to site agents, contractors, engineers and other interested stakeholders in the road construction industry across the globe.
The department’s objectives are:
a) To equip the trainees with the relevant technical skills, knowledge, attitude and competencies to enable them be relevant, responsive and demonstrate professionalism in the dynamic road construction sector.
b) To produce Technicians and Technologists to meet industrial and technological needs through attachment, innovation, research & development.
c) To enable trainees acquire foundation for further training in the road construction industry
The department embraces blended learning to ensure maximum utilization knowledge transfer and sharing. That is through the presence of relevant trainers who also work in the road construction industry thus are up to date with the current technology, use of simulations, mentors from the road agencies, practicals in the field and industrial attachment in an actual ongoing project. The trainees also get exposed to carrying out their own project work which gives them an opportunity to develop and implement their own ideas and experience in writing a technical report and in keeping records of work as it proceeds.
Through EASTRIP, the Institution has relationships with other Institutions from within and without the country. This has allowed interactions with various technologies and knowledge transfer across borders in the road sector. This ensures that our trainees are able to blend in across borders and work anywhere. The department is in the process of coming up with new courses that will be common across the borders.
