About KIHBT

The Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT) is a training institution under the State Department of Roads, in the Ministry of Roads and Transport. Established in 1948, KIHBT is mandated to capacity-build the roads and infrastructure sector in Kenya and beyond. The institute operates three campuses — Nairobi, Ngong (Kajiado County), and Kisii County — and trains approximately 3,000 students annually.

KIHBT's vision is to be the preferred training institute for infrastructure development in Africa and beyond, with a mission of facilitating the provision of high-quality training for infrastructure development.

Short Courses and Capacity Building

KIHBT offers short courses and workshops tailored for professionals in the infrastructure sector including contractors, supervisors, and technical staff. These include AutoCAD and Drafting Techniques, Road Safety Management, Construction Site Management, Highway Maintenance and Management, Heavy Plant Operator Training, Surveying and Mapping, Project Management in Construction, Construction Management for Roads and Building Projects, and Bridge Management among others.

Fees Structure 2026

All fees are for Day Scholars. Limited hostel accommodation is available on a first-come, first-served basis at an extra KSh 27,000 per term. Fees may be reviewed from time to time without further notice.

Entry Requirements

Certificate Courses

  • Minimum KCSE mean grade of D (Plain) or equivalent
  • D (Plain) in Mathematics and English

Diploma Courses

  • Minimum KCSE mean grade of C- (Minus) or equivalent
  • C- (Minus) in Mathematics, English, and Physics or Physical Science
  • Alternatively, a relevant certificate from a recognized institution

All courses are open to all Kenyan nationals and are offered on a full-time basis at campus premises.

How to Apply

Option 1 — Apply via KIMS Student Portal (Recommended)

KIHBT's new integrated student portal allows you to apply for courses, make fee payments, book hostel accommodation, and access all student services from one place.

  1. Visit kims.kihbt.ac.ke
  2. Browse available short courses or long-term programmes
  3. Complete your online application and make payment securely
  4. Activate your student account using your admission number once admitted

Option 2 — Apply via eCitizen

  1. Log in at kihbt.ecitizen.go.ke
  2. Fill in your details and select your first and second course choices
  3. Upload relevant documents and make the application payment
  4. Print copies of the invoice and application form and submit to the Registrar's Office

Option 3 — Walk-in Application

  1. Visit the Registrar's Office at any KIHBT campus
  2. Select a course and make a non-refundable payment of KES 1,000 to the National Bank of Kenya
  3. Submit your completed forms to the Registrar's Office

  • Copy of National ID or Passport
  • Academic certificates (KCSE certificate or equivalent)
  • Application fee receipt (KES 1,000)
